The cause, briefly
Ladakh asks for two things it was promised: statehood, and the Sixth Schedule’s protections for its land, jobs, and tribal identity. Since 2019 it has been a Union Territory without a legislature — decisions about a fragile high-altitude homeland are made without the people who live there. Years of peaceful movement brought the Centre to the table, and talks with the High-Powered Committee are on: stalling, restarting, inching. This is the negotiation stage. Steady, visible support now decides whether the table produces safeguards or a shrug.
